Tokenized equities are at the early stages of being issued across multiple blockchains, spanning both public and permissioned networks. The corporate actions attached to those equities still need to execute wherever the asset exists. Cash dividends are the most common equity corporate action by event count, and enabling investors to receive dividends in tokenized cash is not a straightforward process, especially when wallets are on different blockchain networks.

For the 2026 Swift Hackathon Business Challenge, Chainlink built a novel solution that solves this by automating a cash dividend across four blockchains, from the corporate action announcement through payment and final reconciliation, with no manual intervention required at any step.

The solution leverages the Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) to coordinate the workflow end-to-end, alongside multiple Chainlink services for cross-chain connectivity, compliance, and market data. ISO 20022 remains the messaging standard throughout, enabling institutions to manage tokenized securities through the infrastructure and operational standards they already use.

Swift Hackathon 2026 Business Challenge

The 2026 Business Challenge asked, “Who does what in a tokenized world?” Chainlink’s submission focused on the registrar or paying agent responsible for distributing a cash dividend on tokenized equities.

In traditional markets, that role relies on a single authoritative register to determine which investors are entitled to a dividend. When the same tokenized share class may have to be distributed across several digital ledgers at once, the paying agent needs a reliable view of ownership across all of them, including shares moving between networks.

The payment leg introduces another layer of complexity. Each holder may receive the dividend on a different blockchain and in a different form of digital money, such as a stablecoin or tokenized deposit. The paying agent still has to ensure compliance and tax requirements, complete every payment, and produce a full record for the issuer and regulators.

In addition, corporate action messages fix entitlement using a calendar record date based on a multi-day settlement cycle, and payment messages assume funds are heading to fiat accounts. Neither has a way to express the precise moment a snapshot is taken, nor the wallet, blockchain, and settlement token required for an onchain payment.

Chainlink’s Solution for Distributing Dividends Across Multiple Blockchains

Chainlink's solution provides the registrar or paying agent with a single coordinated workflow that executes across every blockchain on which the shares are issued. CRE receives the corporate action notification via an ISO 20022 message and validates it. CRE then schedules the entitlement snapshot and pay date, reads the required data from each blockchain, calculates what each investor is owed, and automates the execution of the payments.

CRE enables the full dividend lifecycle to run across multiple blockchains through a single workflow.

The benefits of this solution include:

  • A single ownership record across multiple blockchains: Blockchains feature different block confirmation times and rules for when a transaction is considered final. CRE reconciles those differences by reading holder positions across all networks and combining them into a single canonical register. The solution also defines how shares moving across chains at the cutoff are assigned, so no position is double-counted or lost.
  • Accurate entitlements with built-in compliance: Chainlink’s Automated Compliance Engine (ACE) checks each wallet against the required identity, sanctions, tax status, and eligibility rules before the dividend is calculated. Chainlink Data Feeds provide the data needed to adjust the reference price when the shares go ex-dividend.
  • Automated payments and complete audit trail: On pay date, CRE delivers the dividend to each holder's wallet in the selected stablecoin or tokenized deposit, on whichever network that wallet sits on, with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) delivering the settlement asset to chains where it is not natively issued. Each payment is tied back to the original corporate action message, giving the paying agent a clear record of what settled and what may need to be retried.

The result is a unified corporate action workflow that runs from announcement to reconciliation without any manual intervention required. The registrar or paying agent retains its role and its accountability, while CRE provides the orchestration layer needed to execute the workflow across multiple blockchains.

The submission also proposes an extension to existing ISO 20022 corporate action and payment messages. The additional information defines an exact cross-ledger snapshot and identifies the beneficiary wallet, target blockchain, settlement token, and onchain transaction reference. This extension would allow the existing standard to carry the information needed for digital asset settlement.

Extending the Solution Across Corporate Actions

The solution covers a single event, but the underlying model is broadly applicable. The same approach can support interest payments, redemptions, rights issues, stock splits, and proxy record dates, as well as settlement in stablecoins, tokenized deposits, or central bank digital currencies.

The requirement is the same every time. A trusted view of ownership must be established across every ledger, with the relevant rules applied, and the resulting transactions coordinated through the systems and standards institutions already rely on. Chainlink provides the data, connectivity, compliance functionality, and orchestration needed to make that possible, all within a single environment.

Advancing the Swift and Chainlink Strategic Partnership

For more than eight years, Chainlink and Swift have worked together to enable global financial institutions to connect with blockchains through existing infrastructure and messaging standards. This work spans cross-chain transfers, tokenized fund subscriptions and redemptions, the use of AI oracles to streamline corporate action processing, and more. Read more about the Swift and Chainlink partnership here.

This solution builds on that work to execute a full corporate action across multiple ledgers simultaneously, highlighting how Swift's messaging standards and the Chainlink platform combine to give institutions a standardized way to service tokenized assets across both public and private blockchains while preserving the controls and standards capital markets already depend on.

We thank Swift for organizing the 2026 Business Challenge and for selecting this solution as the runner-up, and we look forward to developing this work further with the Swift community.
